A New Direction
I had a realization a couple of weeks ago that surprised me.
I was spending days on end, scouring LinkedIn for any production jobs I could find, and applying to everything as fast as I could. I spent the last 5 years of my life working my way from Office PA to Line Producer, and the slight desperation of being out of work through the holidays had me frantically applying for any jobs that aligned with those skills.
Until I realized – I hate working in production.
Okay, I'm being dramatic. I don't hate production. But I did burn out on it. I found myself getting tired of grinding from job to job, the mindless admin work, trying to keep up with industry rates as the budgets I was being handed slowly shrank to nothing.
All my favorite parts of production were tucked within the creative process. Pre-production calls and shoot days were stimulating and fun. I enjoyed walking through creative decisions with clients. I love executing great vision on set and watching it come to life. Hell, I even enjoyed spending hours in Google Slides making pre-production booklets.
So instead of sitting in fear, trying to get into another job that doesn't excite me, I am using this time to pivot.
Welcome to the Rebrand.
I am now pitching myself as a Creative Director and Director. I have a couple of clients I am already working with, and I'm stoked to get the ball rolling for them. This blog will probably become a quasi-diary to explore this creative journey, as I will eventually grow The Varied into a full-fledged creative agency.
This big decision feels like the culmination of many smaller decisions I've made throughout the last year – i.e., the decision to say no, work for myself, and to only do work that I'm passionate about.
I began my journey in LA as a creative, and I'm excited to get back to those roots now. I desire to build a career that inspires and motivates me. This feels like a step in the right direction.
